GOURMET HEAVEN – CULINARY DELIGHTS AT FREIBURG CHRISTMAS MARKET
Whether it’s a sweet or savoury treat you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it at the Freiburg Christmas market. How about a bag of steaming chestnuts or some flavourful marzipan? Or perhaps the famous ‘Lange Rote’ sausage, a must when in Freiburg, accompanied by a soothingly warm mug of mulled wine. Freshly baked waffles and crêpes round off the culinary delights on offer.
ROAST CHESTNUTS AND OTHER NUTS OF ALL KINDS
It wouldn’t be Christmas, or even winter in general, without chestnuts and other nuts. The fruits of the sweet chestnut tree, known locally as ‘Maroni’, can be boiled, roasted or baked – but the most romantic way to enjoy them is without doubt by grabbing a portion from the chestnut stand at the Christmas market. Aromatic, nutty, slightly sweet and sure to evoke childhood memories. Maroni are mainly grown in Mediterranean countries such as Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Turkey.
Together with other first-class assortments of nuts, they are an integral part of the Freiburg Christmas market. What’s more, a delicious nut mix is the perfect healthy snack between meals. A fine nut selection also makes a great gift!
PURE BLISS – CHOCOLATE AND MARZIPAN
If you love chocolate and marzipan, then the Freiburg Christmas Market is the place for you! The range extends from classic grape and nut varieties to ones containing more sophisticated exotic ingredients such as chilli, coarse salt, champagne cream, Amarena cherries and cranberries – you’ll be spoilt for choice. When it comes to marzipan, the most important thing is that the ground almonds used are of the highest possible quality. Discover the true taste of Christmas with our sweet marzipan and chocolate treats! Perfect as a gift or indulgent snack.
A SAUSAGE, PLEASE! BUT WITH MUSTARD, MAYO OR KETCHUP
Freiburg wouldn’t be Freiburg without its famous ‘Lange Rote’ sausage. This speciality from the Cathedral Square is characterised by its red colour, length and delicate consistency due to the fact that it’s traditionally cooked without casing. Thuringian bratwurst sausages also sizzle appetisingly on the grill. This speciality from Thuringia has an enticing spicy flavour and is made according to an ancient recipe using only the best ingredients. Both types of sausage are of the highest quality. Whether you have them with mustard, mayo or ketchup – give them both a try at the Freiburg Christmas market. You won’t be disappointed!
“LET’S GO GET SOME MULLED WINE!”
When the temperatures drop to below freezing in November, you’ll no doubt hear people saying ‘Let’s go get some mulled wine!’. There’s nothing better in sub-zero temperatures than warming your hands on a glass and savouring the scent of cinnamon, citrus fruits and hot red or white wine. But not all mulled wines, known locally as ‘Glühwein’, are the same. Depending on the recipe, type of wine, spices and other ingredients, the flavour of mulled wines can vary greatly. At our Christmas market in Freiburg, each stall has its own secret recipe. It’s best to try them all and then choose your personal favourite!
WAFFLES, CRÊPES AND DAMPFNUDELS
Waffles, crêpes and dampfnudels are yet more highlights to be discovered at the Freiburg Christmas market. All three sweet treats are extremely tasty, but fundamentally different. Dampfnudels, which are steamed yeast dumplings, are warm and fluffy, served with either a thin vanilla custard or plum compote, and are the true embodiment of wintery goodness. Waffles are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, have an enticing smell and taste heavenly with powdered sugar, chocolate, assorted fruits or cream. Wafer-thin crêpes are actually a French delicacy. You can enjoy them as a sweet treat with Nutella or cinnamon and sugar, or in a savoury variety with ham and cheese. Both are a real taste sensation! Join us and decide which one is your favourite sweet treat.
